Selena came to live with her foster family at the age of 22 months. She had been removed from her home with her mother, due to a methamphetamine arrest. Her father was not considered as an appropriate placement because he was also a meth user and had been recently discharged from prison.
Selena was in Polinsky Children’s Shelter for only three nights before she came to live with her foster family, because of the immediate attention given to her by Angels Foster Family Network.
Her new foster family consisted of Leslie, a single mother, and her eleven-year-old daughter, Jessica. Leslie and Jessica welcomed Selena with open arms into their family and she has enriched everyone’s lives tremendously.
Originally, it was thought that Selena would be a temporary placement and that she would eventually go live with her father when he was further along in his recovery program. However, her father and the foster family developed a friendly relationship early on, and the father ultimately consented to adoption by the foster family.
Selena’s mother was in a residential treatment program for one-and-a-half years and the foster family cooperated with visits to both parents and her half-siblings. Although the mother fought to regain custody during her treatment, she also eventually came to trust the foster family and consensually gave up her parental rights after she was released from treatment program.
Selena is now a beautiful, smart, well-adjusted six-year-old. She loves gymnastics, playing piano, math, playing in the snow, ice-skating, ballet, art, and brownies. She continues to see her birth parents, on a consensual basis. One of her half-siblings comes along on a family vacation once a year, and the sisters regularly get together for birthdays, holidays and sleepovers. She has a very close relationship with her sister Jessica, who is eleven, and loves to go ice skating with her. She has many friends at her school in La Jolla, and she loves to get the very most out of every moment of her life. She is a joy to many, many people and a beautiful part of her adopted family.
