Reactive Attachment Disorder

Permanent—but Preventable

If a baby does not have one consistent caregiver with whom he/she can bond with for the first 18-24 months of life, that baby could be doomed with Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD).

This means that the chances of that baby being able to develop the ability to bond with others in its lifetime is highly unlikely and the consequences are devastating.

During these months, there is a critical period where if a baby does not learn to bond with a human being, that baby will probably never be able to attach to anyone ever.

Attachment is lasting psychological connectedness between two human beings which develops through mutual care seeking and care giving interactions of a primary caregiver (parent of foster parent) and an infant.

If a caregiver is sufficiently detached, physically absent or psychologically absent, RAD generates and the ability to bond with others does not develop.  One does not have to look far into our criminal justice system to see the consequences of this preventable disease.

Typical adults with RAD have some combination of trouble with law or incarceration, sexual deviance, violent and/or sadistic behaviors, total absence of guilt or conscience after committing aberrant acts and a delay in motor, language and intellectual development.

The Cure

RAD is incurable. But it is preventable.

We can prevent RAD from occurring simply by ensuring a baby has one consistent caregiver for at least the first 24 months of life. That is what Angels does differently. Once a child is in the care of an Angels foster home, that child will stay with that family until they are reunified with their biological family or become available for adoption.

Infants who are pathologically neglected or abused need to be placed early into a stable home with appropriate interactions between themselves and their caregiver in order to prevent RAD.  Without this, babies are doomed to a life of solitude, an inability to feel connected to others, trouble with the law and will be a burden on society.

Angels Foster is pioneering the prevention of this incurable disease by requiring foster parents to remain with the child until the courts decide upon final placement (which could be several years).
