Traditional Foster Care

What's Wrong with the County System

More often then you can imagine, children are abused and/or neglected and taken into government custody for their safety. Once a child is in protective custody, the child will most likely be placed in the county traditional foster care system. These are County-licensed foster homes, where a child is cared for in a family setting, attends regular school, and has visits with his/her family.

Unless the foster home is a licensed Foster Family Network “treatment level” home (children with severe mental, emotional, or physical problems), the foster parents are paid approximately $400 per month to care for the child. This is intended to cover the basic living expenses of food, clothing, transportation, entertainment, and shelter.

Each County foster home can foster up to 6 children at a time, in addition to any adopted or biological children they already have as long as they meet licensing requirements for bedrooms. All county foster parents undergo basic training and home inspections. A typical county social worker supports 45-60 children on their caseload at any given time.

Due to the shortage of available foster families, these children are placed into overcrowded homes that are often temporary. Children often get bounced from home to home never having the opportunity to bond with a caregiver. These children often do not receive the attention and love they need and deserve, especially if they are babies.

Angels is different because we find our own foster families, carefully and rigorously screen them and train them to be supportive and loving parents. Once the foster family completes the training and they receives a beautiful child, that child will stay in that one home until he/she is reunited with the biological family or becomes available for adoption. By keeping that child in one home, he/she will be able to bond with the foster parents and receive the love and nurturing they deserve; therefore avoiding the problems that occur from Reactive Attachment Disorder.
